Causes of Egg Production in Poultry Production

1. Stress and change

These two are one of the main causes of reduced egg production. Most laying hens are usually affected by sudden changes in their usual pattern, for example changing the position of an enclosure or nesting box will usually throw the hens off balance and thus reduce their egg production. Poultry farmers should be aware of drastic changes in temperature, for example when the temperature in an enclosure or nest box is too high or too cold. In such cases, the bedding lining of the bedding should be changed daily. Similarly, avoid any sudden changes to the time you feed your hens and avoid unnecessary changes to the composition of their feed.

4. Noise and reduced lighting

Birds are always frightened by noise or the sight of predators. Obviously, hens do not want any other form of noise than the loud characteristic gobble they make when they are about to lay an egg. In addition, reduced light hours can have a detrimental effect on the length of daylight perceived by hens. Scientifically speaking, egg production is influenced by the length of daylight exposure. This means that increased light will stimulate egg production. Hens should enjoy sufficient light for at least 14-16 hours. 

5. Poor or unbalanced diet

An inappropriate diet can adversely affect egg production. Hens need energy, protein and a diet rich in calcium. Do not allow these three nutrients to become deficient in your feed for laying hens. In addition, provide them with a nutritionally balanced diet. 6. Brooding

Brooding usually leads to a decrease in egg production. It is normal for laying hens to exhibit brooding, which is an innate condition. However, this behaviour can be discouraged by increasing artificial lighting in the laying pen.

7. Diseases and parasites

When laying hens are disturbed by parasites such as worms or diseases such as Newcastle disease, their egg production usually suffers. If you notice a drop in egg production, try to see if the birds are healthy or if they are infected with a disease and then take the necessary steps. Regularly worm your birds and dust them to remove ectoparasites such as ticks and fleas.
